avarice

Avarice is money greed. Corruption has contaminated the American church and its most prominent ministers. Christians everywhere put up a false god named Je$u$ and look for financial blessings in the name of the Lord more than spiritual ones. The worst of them justify themselves in the name of the laissez faire of manifest destiny and the god of free enterprise to look down on the poor and exploit them until they have nothing. These are the avaricious whitewashed hypocrites that Jesus opposes, laying up treasures for themselves and storing nothing in Heaven. The worst of them come in the name of the Lord with words of comfort, peace, prosperity and things of this world, ignorant of their own arrogant bourgeois mediocrity. Putting their own family above all others they have taught their children how to worship the image of the beast and take its mark. They look squeaky clean on the outside but have the stench of lukewarm puke inside.

Aristotle: "For all moneymakers increase their hoard without limit."
A. Kempis: "Money to God's servants is nothing else but a devil and a poisonous snake."
Petrarch: "I have always possessed an extreme contempt for wealth."
Plato: "A government resting on a valuation of property, in which the rich have power and the poor man is deprived of it. And so they grow richer and richer, and the more they think of making a fortune the less they think of virtue; for when riches and virtue are placed together in the scales of the balance, the one always rises as the other falls."

Wesley simply could not believe that a man could accumulate great wealth and have a healthy spiritual life. At the historical dawn of capitalist production, and every capitalist upstart has personally to go through this historic stage - avarice and the desire to get rich are the ruling passions. Paul writing to Timothy was strongly opposed to certain teachers pursuing profession based on monetary gain, he called it filthy lucre to Titus. Avarice only appeals to the selfish and will always tempt its owners to abuse it.

Spiritually, humble poverty is true wealth and pampered wealth is real poverty. The luke-warm church is so comfortable in their riches that they have no idea of the judgment that is soon coming upon them. This delusion has blinded them to the point that they think that they will be immune from the judgment and won't be bothered with it at all. Living in their bourgeoise mediocrity makes them look upon poverty as something to look down on instead of up to, so they pray for riches and the delusion becomes even greater. Let the poor brother glory in the beatitude of poverty, it is a gift of God. Rich man, weep and howl because the judgment of your avarice is soon coming to you and you will fall. We are all given the choice to choose between either God and mammon.

The Lord has given Christians the grace to reconcile the children to their Fathers
