The Candlestick

In the tabernacle in the wilderness there was a piece of furniture in the Holy Place called the candlestick or lampstand. this was made of gold with a central shaft from which projected three branches on each side, all rising as high as the central shaft, to the same level. These six branches and the central shaft formed a single unit of seven branches, all ending in sockets into which the seven lamps were placed. This candlestick or lampstand is symbolic of the Holy Spirit. The sacred scroll lit by a seven-branched lampstand, or menorah.

Moses - And thou shall make a candlestick of pure gold, of beaten work shall the candlestick be made.. And six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three.. out of the one side and.. three out of the other.. almonds.. flowers.. of gold.. Of a talent of pure gold.. Jewish tradition assigns it a height of about five feet, and a breadth of about three and a half feet.. Opinion generally place them on a horizontal line, although the instructions given in Exodus afford no information.

In the tabernacle, the golden candlestick stood on the left hand of one entering the Holy Place, opposite the table of show-bread. It consisted of a pedestal; un upright shaft; six arms, three on each side, and three on the opposite side of the shaft; and seven lamps surmounting the shaft and arms. The arms were adorned with three kinds of carved ornaments, called cups, globes, and blossoms. Its lamps were supplied with pure olive oil and lighted every evening.. This was carried to Rome, on the destruction of Jerusalem. And behold a candlestick all of gold.. and two olive trees by it.
