Wisdom

To research the Bible for wisdom is to read it from cover to cover. The Lord told Moses to speak unto all that are wisehearted, whom He has filled with the spirit of wisdom. This puts wisdom squarely as from coming from the Lord as a spirit in which we can be filled with, along with knowledge and understanding. Aquinas: "Now of all human pursuits, that of wisdom is the most perfect, the most sublime, the most profitable, the most delightful." The Psalmist wrote that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. David desired that the Lord would give his son Solomon, wisdom and understanding. Solomon prayed for that promise to be fulfilled and because he chose wisdom over riches, the Lord blessed him with more wisdom and understanding than any other, so much that people from all over the world came to hear the wisdom of the King of Israel. The most common theme of Solomon's book of Proverbs is wisdom, "to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity."

Wisdom is described not only as a spirit in the Proverbs but in the feminine sense, "Wisdom cries without, she utters her voice in the streets. She cries in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gate, in the city she utters her words." Also from the ancient Book of Wisdom: "For she (wisdom) is the breath of the power of God, and a pure influence flowing from the glory of the Almighty; therefore can no defiled thing fall into her. For she is the brightness of the everlasting light, the unspotted mirror of the power of God and the image of His goodness. And being but one, she can do all things, and remaining in herself, she makes all things new; and in all ages, entering into holy souls, she makes them friends of God and prophets."

You can gain wisdom on your own and under your own power and you may be filled with the wisdom of the world but this is not godly wisdom. "Be not wise in your own eyes, fear the Lord and depart from evil." Now there is godly wisdom and there is worldly wisdom. The wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. You can think that you are wise but one with godly wisdom will see right through you. "Wisdom begins," said Jung, "when we take things as they are; otherwise we get nowhere." God is where wisdom is at. And so, too, with academies and chairs of philosophy. You have a kind of sign-board hung out to show the apparent abode of wisdom: but wisdom is another guest who declines the invitation; she is to be found elsewhere. James, the brother of Jesus recognized the two types of wisdom. The wisdom and knowledge from above is shown with meekness. "But if you have bitter envying and strife in you hearts, glory not and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descends not from above but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy."

James also wrote "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that gives to all men liberally, and upbraids not and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed." Just like any other good gift from God, you want it, just ask.
