astrology

Astrology is the study of the influence of heavenly bodies on human affairs. The astrologers were men who pretended to foretell future events by means of astronomical observations. It was fancied that the stars and planets had an influence for good or for evil on human affairs, and that certain aspects and relative positions of the heavenly bodies were full of meaning to those who had skill to interpret them. These superstitions were prevalent among the Babylonians, Chaldeans, Assyrians, Egyptians, Phoenicians and Arabs, and were closely connected with the worship of the sun, moon, and stars. The practice is still wide-spread today.

The ancient art of divination by consulting the planets and the stars is bound up with astronomy, popular today for those who are unable to make important decisions without first consulting the stars or their horoscopes. The early Christians tended to condemn astrology, along with pagan soothsayers, augurers, magicians, sorcerers, and other oracles, because by subjecting men to celestial influences, it left no scope for the operation of free will and spirituality. Unfortunately many Christian prophets today are no better.

During the time of Daniel, there were many astrologers in Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar found of the Jewish prophets of Daniel and his friends, "In all matters of wisdom and understanding that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm." In condemning the sins of modern day Babylon, Isaiah writes, "You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators stand up and save you from these things that shall come upon you. Behold they shall be as stubble, the fire shall burn them, they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame, there shall not be a coal to warm at nor fire to sit before it."

Astrology is now and always has been, relegated to the ignorant, weak minded and those superstitious souls prone to magic, the black arts, sorcery and the occult.
