The Great Tribulation

The great tribulation is generally regarded as the final week of Daniel's seventieth week, especially the last three and a half years. The gigantic wars, cataclysms, pestilences, etc., that befall the earth are actually manifestations of the risen, victorious Christ taking an open hand to claim His redeemed rights to the earth in preparation for the divine program involving His people on the earth.

And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which stands for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered every one that shall be found written in the book. But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. The hour of temptation, which shall come upon the whole world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Alas! For that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it. And after three score and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for Himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers counsel together, against the Lord, and against His anointed. He that sits in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in diverse places. All these are the beginnings of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and you shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and hate one another. And many false prophets shall arise, and shall deceive many. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto nations and then shall the end come.

There has been a commonly accepted idea that the Great Tribulation would be a period of seven years. The Lord said it would start at the midpoint of the seven years. This is the period of unparalleled suffering, which, according to premillenial eschatology, will precede the establishment of the future kingdom of Israel. The trouble will embrace the entire earth, it is the time of Jacob's trouble. It will involve the Jewish people who will have gone back to Palestine in unbelief. Made identical with the last 3 and a half years of Daniel's seventieth week.
