Dostoevsky

Dostoevsky was a Russian author. Tolstoy thought the Christian message involved a radical criticism of society, and his conception of the gospel was social. Dostoevsky's novels, on the other hand, urge the individual to repent of his sins, to accept social injustice because, no matter how harshly we are treated, in view of our sinfulness and guilt we deserve no better; and not to pin our faith on social reforms.

All his life Dostoevsky was obsessed with the opposition between an all powerful God and the frightening freedom of man. His life passion was what happens to man when, having his liberty, he turns to arbitrary self-will. Only then can the depth of human nature be seen (reflected in his novels).
