Averroes

Averroes was the great Moslem philosopher and lived from 1126-1198. His commentaries on Aristotle were translated from Arabic into Latin and available to the Christian West before the original Greek. Ibn Rushd was not badly treated, but he was disgraced and after his death his writings were rejected by his own people.

Averroes was the greatest philosophers of the Arabs, and the last one, Arab philosophy ending with him while reaching its climax. His posthumous fame was based less on his original Arabic writings than on Latin and Hebrew translations of them. Arabic science and Islamic progress were killed by religious intolerance and obscurantism. There is no better example of a great culture being stopped dead by theological conceit and stupidity.
