Jerusalem was subsequently annexed to the sultany of Egypt, enter St. Louis. Aimed at Egypt, His years in the east had no practical result. After obtaining some important triumphs, Damietta was again captured in 1249, St. Louis himself was defeated and captured in Egypt and then held for ransom. The king and his knights were made prisoner and Louis was forced to purchase his freedom by the payment of a large ransom. The remaining Franks were released and sailed away to Palestine, without having accomplished anything at all. (1250). He was compelled to return home in 1254, where he again occupied Dalmietta, and tried to make good the failure of the fifth crusade.
