Caesarea Philippi

Caesarea Philippi was the northern limit of Jesus' travels in the Holy Land, a town in the northern part of Palestine, about 150 miles from Jerusalem, 50 from Damascus, and 30 from Tyre, near the foot of Mount Hermon. It was 3 or 4 miles east of Dan, near the eastern source of the Jordan.

Jesus visited this place shortly before his transfiguration. Once before, at Caesarea Philippi, when Jesus had spoken of His death, there had been days of silence and dismay. Then, they were in a lonely place, where they could bury their distress in solitude; but now the crisis was upon them, and this unbearable silence of the Master was silence in the midst of a crowd.

After the destruction of Jerusalem, Titus made the captive Jews fight here at Caesarea Philippi and kill each other in gladiatorial shows.
