soul

Basically, the soul is the person, the soul that sins will die and God is able to kill it. The person however, will go along with the spirit to heaven. The Bible teaches that the living soul is of this world, whether it goes on to the next is of course in a spiritual sense. Jesus taught that "For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" Mr 8:36. If we can lose it, we should also be able to see it saved.

But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. Heb 10:39.

Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. James 5:20

For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved. Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope. Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Acts 2:25-27.

I am to love the LORD and to serve him with all my heart and with all my soul, in that these are two different things is good enough.
Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Isa 55:3
Plato acknowledged not only that the soul existed before birth, but also that the souls of some exist, and will continue to exist after death, and will be born again and again, and that there is a natural strength in the soul which will hold out and be born many times. The writer of Hebrews however teaches "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." Heb 9:27.
Socrates: Yet all men will agree that God, and the essential form of life, and the immortal in general, will never perish.
Emerson: All goes to show that the soul in man is not an organ, but animates and exercises all the organs; is not a function like the power of memory, of calculation, of comparison, but uses these as hands and feet; is not a faculty, but a light; is not the intellect or the will, but the master of the intellect and the will; is the background of our being.
Aquinas: Aristotle ascribed certain virtues to the various powers of the soul. Again, it is of value to the natural philosopher, because a great part of the physical universe is composed of beings endowed with souls, and the soul is the starting point of all motion in things which live. The soul is indeed, as it were, a life-giving principle in animate things.
