John Bunyan

John Bunyan was the English author of "Pilgrim's Progress" and lived from 1628 to 1688. He was a tinker's son who read the Bible and Fox's Book of Martyrs while in jail. Bunyan joined the Baptist church in Bedford. He began to preach, but when dissenters were persecuted with the restoration of King Charles II, he was thrown in jail (1660) for twelve years.

His four small children and a second wife wept for John Bunyan and waited for his release, while he worked at making thread laces to support them. Bunyan began his book in jail and was then finally released. Pilgrim's Progress tells of a Christian journey through life and was written as an allegory. It was Europe's best seller in the 17th century.
