Bashan

Bashan means fat or fruitful and was a rich hilly district lying northeast of the sea of Galilee. Golan, one of the cities in the region, was a city of refuge. Bashan was productive and noted for its fine breed of cattle. The cities of Bashan are described by Moses as "fenced cities with high walls, gates and bars." The inhabitants were giant-like men who were called Rephraim in the era of Abraham.

Bashan is celebrated in Scripture for its stately oaks, its famous large strong cattle, and its rich pasturage. It had verdant and fertile meadows, valleys traversed by refreshing streams, hills crowned with forests, and pastures offering an abundance to the flocks that wander through them.

David in his prophecy of Jesus on the cross with "Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. Many bulls have compassed me; strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion."
[BD, 380, Genesis 14, Psalms 22]
