Armageddon

The place of the last great earthly battle is called Armageddon and the place where the Anti-christ will summon the kings of the world for the final battle of mankind, the last gigantic battle between good and evil and deciding the sovereignty of the whole earth.
And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them together to the battle of that great day of God Almighty... into a place called Armageddon.

Armageddon is the Greek word for "Hill of Megiddo." This is the ancient hill of the Valley of Megiddo in the Plain of Jezreel in central Palestine , extending from the Mediterranean to the west of Jordan, separating the mountain ranges of Carmel and Samaria from those of Galilee and across the plain of Esdraelon from Nazareth. It has been the great battlefield of Palestine and the military key of Syria. The vale of Kishon and the region of Megiddo were inevitable battlefields. In the 14th century BC Thutmose III, brilliant ruler of Egypt said that "Megiddo is worth a thousand cities." Also called the Valley of Jehoshaphat, it is a 14 by 20 mile plot of land Napoleon appraised as an ideal battleground, saying "all the armies of the world could maneuver their forces on this vast plain." Armageddon was famous for two great victories in the Bible, of Barak over the Caananites and Gideon over the Mideanites. This is where death of Saul took place and also Hosiah. Its strategic position as a crossroad is a fit type for the great battleground of the centuries.

In the prophetic scriptures the last great battle of the age will be fought here at Armageddon. The sequence of events is not clear in the Apocalypse as if the order goes back and forth but it seems that Babylon will fall before Armageddon, rise and fall again after. Armageddon usually refers to the end of the world but more accurately, it is the place where the battle takes place and will signal the end of the age or of the world as we know it, for the millennial kingdom will follow a short time after. The last great battle of the "times of the gentiles" finds fulfillment in the smiting stone prophecy of Daniel 2:35 and ushers in the Day of the Lord.

And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
God actively and visibly manifests His glorious power to the discomfort and destruction of His enemies. Jesus in His advent of glory will deliver His remnant besieged by the Gentile world powers under the beast and the false prophet. The besieging hosts, alarmed by the signs preceding the Lord's advent fall back to Megiddo after the events of Zech 14:2, where their decimation begins, with the destruction completed in Moab and the plains of Idumea.
Zechariah 14: Behold, the day of the LORD comes, and your spoil shall be divided in the midst of you. For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. And you shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yes, you shall flee, like as you fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with you.

One of the plagues that God has sent upon the earth before this time will be intense solar heat, a result of global warming, no doubt. Also is the fact that the two witness have the power to not let it rain on the earth. This should cause a drought and the river Euphrates will dry up allowing land forces easy access to the field of battle. There were four angels bound in the river Euphrates and when loosed, an army of 200 million who had been waiting for over a year will descend to slay a third part of men. "And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared." The only single nation today of amassing an army of this size is Red China.

A prophecy of Hosea the first chapter may possibly suggest the reconciliation of the Jews and Christians at this time if we are to interpret Israel as the church being the Lords people that were not formely His:

Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, You are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, You are the sons of the living God. Then shall the children of Judah and the children of Israel be gathered together, and appoint themselves one head (Jesus?), and they shall come up out of the land: for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

This area is know as the valley of Jehoshaphat, not as a place but as a description. Jehoshaphat means "valley of the judged" and refers to when King Jehoshaphat and Judah sought the face of the Lord.

Joel: Proclaim this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong. Assemble yourselves, and come, all you heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD. Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about. Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision. The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of His people, and the strength of the children of Israel. So shall you know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.
Revelation: And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

What is our responsiblility as Christians during this time? Certainly not to be involved in the carnal warfare but rather to sing our new song, be like Jesus and to praise the Lord. Isaiah:

I the LORD have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will keep you, and give you for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images. Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and His praise from the end of the earth, you that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains. Let them give glory unto the LORD, and declare his praise in the islands. The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, He shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: He shall cry, yea, roar; He shall prevail against his enemies. I have long time holden my peace; I have been still, and refrained myself: now will I cry like a travailing woman; I will destroy and devour at once. I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools. And I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known: I will make darkness light before them, and crooked things straight. These things will I do unto them, and not forsake them. They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, You are our gods... Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come? Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LORD, He against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in His ways, neither were they obedient unto His law. Therefore He has poured upon him the fury of His anger, and the strength of battle: and it has set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
