Why did Saint James warn the rich to weep and howl because of impending misery? Because they had cheated their workers. And what will become of virtue when one must get rich at any price? Ancient politicians incessantly talked about morals and virtue, those of our time talk only of business and money. Money is opposed to God. The Word of god speaks of it as the mammon of unrighteousness.
As the author of the luke-warm church and the bastion of Babylon, John Calvin's greatest heresy was that God dispenses riches and poverty as He will. The ignorance that teaches that gain is godliness is exalted today; it is preached from the pulpit that not man's merit, or man's toil, that gets a person riches but rather it is God's grace, the chosen of God get riches as an evidence of God's favor. The fact is that they have fallen from grace. "Will you set your eyes upon that which is not? For riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven."
When the use of coin had once been discovered, out of the barter of necessary articles arose the other art of wealth getting, namely trade; which was at first probably a simple matter, but became more complicated as soon as men learned by experience where and by what exchanges the greatest profit might be made. The example of great and pure characters is the only thing that can produce fine ideas and noble deeds. Money only appeals to selfishness and always tempts its owners irresistibly to abuse it. Einstein: "They persistently insist that God casts down the wealthy and powerful - precisely because they became wealthy by oppressing the poor and because they failed to feed the hungry."
