Seventy Weeks Prophecy of Daniel

Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Daniel 9:24-27

Seventy weeks, then, or 490 days of the 2300, were allotted to Jerusalem and the Jews. If these seventy weeks are fulfilled as weeks of years, then the 2300 days, of which these are a part, are for so many years. They were to date from the going forth of the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem. In the year 446 Nehemiah obtained permission to go to Jerusalem and rebuild the walls of the city.

In the midst of the last week (3 1/2 years), "he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate." This is the abomination of desolation that Jesus warned us about and that we must flee. This could be construed to have happened in the destruction of the temple at Jerusalem in 70 AD, but Jesus goes on to tell us that afterward we would be seeing "the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory." It has been applied to the mid point of the seven year tribulation period and beyond to the end.

What is this prophecy doing in the Bible anyway? No matter what conclusions we can come up with, it will not change the mind of a believer or an unbeliever. It must be here not just to prove that Jesus has come at a certain time and prophecy can be fulfilled so accurately but that there is a real message that can be applied to our understanding in these last days. This prophecy provides clues to an understanding of the tribulation period, the wiles of the Anti-christ and to the restoration,
