Leviathan was a serpent monster mentioned in the Old Testament. He has been used to describe an unusually large animal, like a whale or crocodile or anything that would be untypically large of its kind as in large ships. The Hebrew word for twisted or coiled was livyathan and may be a concept adapted to Biblical usage from a Canaananite myth. In general, leviathan is a word signifying an animal, writhing or gathering itself into folds. It denoted the dragon which, according to Eastern tradition, is an enemy of light.

The 41st chapter of Job describes Leviathan who is said to have been a crocodile but is identified here as pride and contrasted prophetically between God and man:

Job 41:1  Can you draw out Leviathan with a hook? Or his tongue with a cord which you let down? Can you put a hook into his nose? Or bore his jaw through with a thorn? Will he make many supplications unto you? Will he speak soft words unto you? Will he make a covenant with you? Will you take him for a servant for ever? Will you play with him as with a bird? Or wilt you bind him for thy maidens? Shall the companions make a banquet of him? Shall they part him among the merchants? Can you fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears? Lay your hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more. Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before Me? Who has prevented Me, that I should repay him? Whatsoever is under the whole heaven is Mine. I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion. Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle? Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about. His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal. One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered. By his neesings a light shines, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. Out of his nostrils goes smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron. His breath kindles coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth. In his neck remains strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him. The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved. His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone. When he raises up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves. The sword of him that lays at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon. He esteems iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood. The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble. Darts are counted as stubble: he laughs at the shaking of a spear. Sharp stones are under him: he spreads sharp pointed things upon the mire. makes the deep to boil like a pot: he makes the sea like a pot of ointment. He makes a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary. Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear. He beholds all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.

After the Lord spoke these things to Job, he repented in dust and ashes. God was not telling Job about a sea monster or a whale or crocodile, He was speaking of the sin of pride. Pride is the monster that gets in the way of doing God's will, now as much as it was then.

David also writes of Leviathan in the way that brings it more up to end-time prophetic events concerning the judgment to come.

For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. You divided the sea by your strength: you break the heads of the dragons in the waters. You break the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gave him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness. You cleaved the fountain and the flood: you dried up mighty rivers. The day is yours, the night also is yours: you have prepared the light and the sun. You have set all the borders of the earth: you have made summer and winter. Remember this, that the enemy has reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed your name. O deliver not the soul of your turtledove unto the multitude of the wicked: forget not the congregation of your poor for ever. Have respect unto the covenant: for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty. O let not the oppressed return ashamed: let the poor and needy praise your name. Arise, O God, plead your own cause: remember how the foolish man reproaches you daily. Forget not the voice of your enemies: the tumult of those that rise up against you increases continually.

The prophet Isaiah in writing of the last days, Leviathan symbolizes the triumphant Judgment Day when God will punish and triumph over the threatening evil. The vineyard of the Lord is protected during this time, Israel is mentioned here, not Judah.

In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea. In that day sing unto her, A vineyard of red wine. I the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any hurt it, I will keep it night and day. Fury is not in me: who would set the briers and thorns against me in battle? I would go through them, I would burn them together. Or let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me. He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.

Leviathan is a most cruel enemy and reigns over pride and the prideful. This serpent is what has risen up out of the sea of humanity to take the sons of men under and destroy them. The great serpent satan rose up in pride against the Lord because he wanted to be boss. As long as there is pride in your life, Jesus is not your master. If Leviathan is your master, you cannot work in the Lord's anointing. Leviathan is the master of so many that have loved their own selves and exalted themselves in this generation above their brothers that the Lord will come in all His fury for a righteous judgment. While the church is in the wilderness and stagnant, those in pride have had their way but in the Day of the Lord they will be brought to the poor state that they always have been but too proud to notice.

We have chosen Jesus and not any chief pecker to lead us and we have been condemned and misunderstood and slandered because of it. If others refuse to rise above their own circumstances and come to one accord shoulder to shoulder with us, so be it. My own mind is that we love the Lord enough to put aside the pride of our calling. Pride comes before a fall and someone else will have to pick them up. My calling is from God, hopefully so is yours. Those that hear the call of God upon their life will recognize these callings, those under the delusions of pride will not. Neither will those hear that have given themselves over to another's calling to follow him in thinking by doing so is following Jesus, that's pride also. This is not a fine line to cross, it is a broad gulf to fall into. Jesus is the bridge. Thank you for bearing witness to me and as to my calling from God. You know that I bear witness to yours you have confirmed my faith in you. We do not need the approval of men, nor do we seek it. It is enough for us to be as we are as to our calling. And it is certainly enough for others willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with us behind Jesus.

I hope I am making sense. With us helping each other in love, we can set each other straight. This is very important for us and important for others to understand. We have an immense task ahead of us but God is with us. We should use the wisdom of the fox as well as the gentleness of the dove. The first thing that they need to know and do is to put aside the pride. You understand this and that is why I keep bringing it up again because it is so important. Until the group is dedicated to the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, deny ourselves and lift Him up and allow Him to lead us by His spirit, we cannot go on.
