Day of the Lord

The prophets of the Bible divided time into two ages. First was the age of evil in which we presently live and which will be destroyed. The second was the golden age of peace and justice, the future millennial kingdom to come. Between these two ages was the Day of the Lord. This is the time of fearful trouble central to the birth pangs of the new heaven and earth, the fall of the old order and the ushering in of the new.

The Jewish nation still waits for the day that God intervenes and breaks directly into history. The prophets have written that at the Day of the Lord, the old world will be destroyed and the new world born. The Christians naturally carried on this prophetic idea as to the Day of the Lord when Jesus returns at the Second Advent with all His angels and glory and power. We now look forward to our day as God is intervening in history and exalts us to the honor that we have hoped for - The Day of the Lord.

The Day of the Lord will be a wonderful time for the people of God for we will be protected. We may suffer from the ravages of man but the Lord will keep us from His wrath. The Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. It will be a fearful day for many, it is a day of the Lord's vengeance and almost upon us. It will come as destruction from the Almighty, a day of wrath and fierce anger, trouble and distress, a day of waste and desolation, a day of gloom and thick darkness for the proud, the rich and the lofty. The haughty will be made low. Mighty men shall cry bitterly and it will cause distress and destruction to those that are blind to the ways of the Lord because of their sin. This is the day when the stars will not give their light and the sun shall be darkened. The heavens shall be shaken and the earth shall remove out of her place. Men "will beat their breasts in shame and cover their heads in their hands. Their blood will be poured out like water and all of their money and possessions shall not be able to deliver them."

The church will still be here as we see the day approaching.

Sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD, Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come. Is not the meat cut off before our eyes, yea, joy and gladness from the house of our God?
By this time, the church has been through the sifting, the reapers have been called and Babylon has been exposed but yet still exerts her influence. The Bride will come out of her closet and the Bridegroom is ready to greet her. This is the time of the fullness of the latter rain, the final unity of God's people, the repentance of the church of God and the restoration will be complete. It is also the time for Armageddon.

The trumpet is at your lips. Knowing the truth gives you a solemn responsibility. Will you blow the trumpet in Zion? Sound an alarm in my holy mountain, against the fenced cities, and against the high towers, saith the Lord? Arise my people. The world will behold you as great and strong, never have they seen the likes of you and neither shall be any more like you after this. Be strong and take courage for a devouring fire is set before you and behind you a flame burns. Gather yourselves together, O nation not desired; yes gather together without shame, you are worthy. Gather yourself together as one and come against her. There is still time, rise up to the battle before the decree comes forth, before the day passes as the chaff and before the fierce anger of the Lord comes upon you. Humble yourself and seek the Lord now, you meek of the earth and execute judgment - seek righteousness, seek meekness, seek holiness, it may be that you shall be hid in the Day of the Lord's anger.

Woe unto you that desire the Day of the Lord! To what end is it for you? The Day of the Lord is darkness, not light... Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it? I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. Behold, the day of the Lord comes quickly and your spoil will be divided in the midst of you. I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city and the houses shall be taken. Then I shall go forth and fight against those nations as when I fought in the day of battle. And my feet shall stand in that day upon the Mount of Olives. For the Day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen, as you have done, it shall be done unto you, your reward shall return upon your own head. Hold your peace at the presence of the Lord God, for the day of the Lord is at hand. Be ready to meet Him for the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night. The heavens and everything below will pass away with a great noise, the elements of the earth shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and its works shall be burned.

The Gentile nations that are mentioned in the day of the Lord are probably those that would come against Jerusalem. They include Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia, Lydia (Turkey), and all the mingled people, and the Chubs which were the name of a people in alliance with Egypt in the time of Nebuchadnezzar. The word Chubs is found only in Ezek. 30:5 and probably a people of Northern Africa, or of the lands near Egypt in the south. Also involved is the north country by the river Euphrates which is in Iraq and Giliad which is the mountainous area East of the Jordan river in what is now the country of Jordan. These nations are especially Muslim strongholds and Egypt is most prominently mentioned as if they may be taking the lead. Their destruction will come from the north which usually refers to Russia, are they allied or do they come against the others? It will be a great slaughter on Islam. Jeremiah's vision includes this destruction as coming out of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon but does not seem to have been fulfilled in history but rather a time to come. Assumed as being with these countries are the prophecies of Ezekiel and include Gog, the land of Magog (Russia), Gomer (Germany/eastern Europe) and Togarmah (Armenian).

And thou shalt come up against my people of Israel, as a cloud to cover the land; it shall be in the latter days, and I will bring thee against my land, that the heathen may know me, when I shall be sanctified in thee, O Gog, before their eyes.".... "Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD." ...."I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel.... And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
The area of Edom is in Southern Palestine , north of the Gulf of Aqaba near the Sinai.

Israel will be punished but not destroyed.

I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests; And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham; And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him. Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD has prepared a sacrifice, he has bid his guests. And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD'S sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king's children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel. In the same day also will I punish all those that leap on the threshold, which fill their masters' houses with violence and deceit.... I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.

Saint Paul mentions the Day of the Lord as being the day of the Lord Jesus concerning salvation:

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, To deliver such an one (fornicator) unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
This is day of holiness as well as destruction; the Bride of Christ will have made herself ready. This is in accordance to what Paul has taught that we will be around to the end and certainly to the Day of the Lord.
For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward. For we write none other things unto you, than what you read or acknowledge; and I trust you shall acknowledge even to the end; As also you have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as you also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus." "But of the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. You are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
Peter says the same thing:
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

If there are two days of the Lord, I cannot see it. The Second Coming is tied into the Day of the Lord and that day will not come until there is a falling away (apostasy) and the man of sin (anti-christ) is revealed.

For by the Spirit I was in the Day of the Lord and it is in the valley of decision. Alas for the day! It is judgment for the nations, destruction from the Almighty shall it come and judgment begins at the house of God. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful Day of the Lord. A dreadful day of terror for the disobedient angels consumed by His power in flaming fire. Yea, as you have prayed of the Bridegroom calling to the Bride, He is now winning her and wooing her - Come out of her My people, be a separate people and I shall be your Lord. The Lord has prepared a sacrifice and has invited his guests. You shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord. Come my people, enter into the chambers and shut the doors about you, hide yourself as it were for a little moment until the indignation is past. Behold, the Lord comes out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood. But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.
