Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great lived from 356 to 323 BC. Alexander swept into Syria taking Palestine, Tyre and Gaza in 332 BC, the Jews had willingly submitted to Alexander. Alexander also conquered Egypt in 332 and Alexandria was founded. On his invasion of Palestine he showed great consideration to the Jews, spared Jerusalem, and offered immunities to the Jews to settle in Alexandria. He established Greek cities all over his domains, and along with them Greek culture and the Greek language. Name mentioned in I Macc 1.1-9, 6.2 and Daniel figuratively 2.39, 7.6, 8.5-7, 11.3-4..

Alexander visited Jerusalem after the siege of Tyre, and was so impressed with the prophecies of Daniel and their fulfillment, that he granted the Jews peculiar privileges. The prophecies of Alexander would be the 8th chapter of Daniel. "The rams which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia. And the rough goat is the king of Grecia, and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out the nation, but not in his power."

The intelligence of the Greeks and their democratic training to self-reliance made them (in the age of their glory) the best soldiers of the time. The extraordinary fame of Alexander rests, mainly, on measureless consequences, unforeseen and unintended by him, that came from his easy overthrow of the Persian power. He died at Babylonia and was buried at Alexandria. He was only 33 when he died; yet he had conquered Persia, revolutionized the Greek world, and exerted the greatest influence on the course of civilization.
