Leo I

Leo the Great was the Roman pontiff from 440 to 461. Leo decided that Roman rule must be obeyed by the universal church. One cannot blame Leo for taking a good deal for granted. He was the only real man who stood up unbowed amid the tumult and tempest of his age. One province after another of the Western Roman Empire fell away.
