Nicholas Copernicus

Nicholas Copernicus lived between 1473-1543. Copernicus was a Polish scientist and astronomer. Although Copernicus dedicated his great book to the pope himself, Christendom did not welcome a theory that overturned the old orthodox view of the earth-centered and man-centered universe. Copernicus made his amazing hypothesis that the sun was the center and not the earth and published his theories in 1543.

It was only with the development of the telescope by Galileo in the opening of the 17th century that the views of Copernicus became widely accepted. Thus, one thought which moved Copernicus, and which has moved scientists ever since, is that nature has a unity, and this unity expresses itself in the simplicity which we find in her laws when we have them right. A study of the Bible should have shut the mouths of the ignorant but ignorance is the first penalty of pride. Isaiah 40:21, 22: "Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is He that sits upon the circle of the earth..." Martin Luther severely criticized Copernicus on a number of occasions. He referred to him as "the new astronomer who wants to prove that the earth goes round, and not the Heavens, the Sun, and the moon... The fool will turn the whole science of Astronomy upside down. But as Holy Writ declares, it was the Sun and not the Earth which Joshua commanded to stand still." John Calvin was equally emphatic in his condemnation, quoting Psalm 93: "The world also is established, that it cannot be moved," and demanded indignantly, "Who will venture to place the authority of a Copernicus above that of the Holy Spirit?" The works of Copernicus and Galileo were included in the index of prohibited books as late as 1819.
