Aquila and Priscilla

Aquila and Priscilla were friends of Paul and possibly co-workers since, like Paul they were also tentmakers. They were Jewish and natives of Pontus. These two people, man and wife, move across the background of Paul's letters and the Book of Acts. Aquila and Priscilla had originally settled in Rome, but in 49 or 50, Claudias had issued a decree banishing all the Jews from Rome.

Aquila and Priscilla had found their way to Corinth, and it was there that Paul first met them and stayed with them. From Corinth they made their way to Ephesus, from which Paul now sends them greetings to their old associates in Corinth. At the time of Paul's writing to Corinth they were still at Ephesus but in the book of Romans we find them again at Rome, and Aquila and his wife Priscilla find their way back to Rome, settling there and again joining the Christian church and providing their house as place of assembly for Christians.

In those days the early church had no buildings and met in private houses, wherever there was room big enough to meet. Wherever Aquila and Priscilla went, their home became a church. During the day they may have employed Paul as a weaver in their tent-making shop, but in the evening they and their friends sat around him listening spellbound as he retold his experiences. Some years later they appear to have returned to Ephesus, for Paul sends salutations to them during his second imprisonment at Rome as being with Timothy.
