Jericho
The cliffs that overhung the narrow defile which led from Jerusalem to Jericho were the haunt of dangerous robbers, the wild beasts and the crocodiles were not yet extinct in the reed beds that marked the swellings of the Jordan. It was the largest of the towns along the banks of the Jordan. This was the famed City of Palm Trees, and favorite winter home of the Herod's among the rebuilt walls.
Jericho is the ancient city that Joshua f'it the battle of. Come down from Perea to the fords of Jordan and cross to Jericho to find it. Here Jesus surely came. About 17 airline miles from Jerusalem and some 3200 feet lower than the Temple city. Consequently, Jericho is much warmer when winter rains fall on the higher Judean hills.
